PH’s 1stStevia grower-manufacturer launches No Sugar iced tea mixes

GIDC, The Stevia Company, and maker of Gloriousproducts, is bringing no sugar iced tea mixes in major supermarkets and groceries!Consumers who cuts on sugar in their diet can now enjoylow calorie, no sugar iced tea mixes that are sweetened by natural alternatives.

Glorious Blend Lemon Iced Tea, Red Tea and Cucumber Lemonade that are sweetened iced tea mixes without sugar are especially produced for people who are cutting and avoiding food and drinks with too much sugar.

Glorious Blend iced tea mixes are naturally sweetened with stevia. The mixes are made from premium ingredients that include mixed berries, real black tea leaves, lemon, and real cucumber. It is low in calorie and loaded with vitamin C.

“Stevia has been regarded as a safe and healthy sugar substitute. It can sweeten foods, and it has several health benefits, including decreased calorie intake, lower blood sugar levels, and less risk of cavities,” said Maura De Leon, the woman behind GIDC, the country’s first FDA registered stevia grower and manufacturer.

Before, stevia was restricted to the health food market without any FDA approval. However, it is now widely used as a natural substitute for artificial sweeteners in many products.

While it has zero calories, stevia is 200 times sweeter than refined sugar and does not affect blood sugar. It is a popular option for people looking to lose weight but who want to reduce their sugar intake.

Stevia is an herb that has been grown in tropical climates for centuries. It is a small bushy plant that belongs to the sunflower family and grows in Paraguay and Brazil, but it can be quickly grown elsewhere. For centuries, the people of Paraguay add them to their foods as sweeteners, and countries like Korea, Brazil, China, Japan, and South America, have long used stevia.

Stevia is now being widely used as a natural sweetener in various food preparations.

People who have diabetes can benefit from stevia. Choosing pure stevia extract can help maintain normal blood sugar levels and should be used in moderation.Stevia can also help cut down added sugar consumption, which can be beneficial for children. High sugar intake in children could lead to heart disease due to reconstructing triglyceride and cholesterol levels, contributing to children’s weight gain. Substituting added sugar for stevia can minimize these risks. At the same time, moderate consumption of foods with stevia and other sweeteners can prevent adverse side effects and promote overall health.

Stevia products such as iced tea mixes, healthy coffees and chocolate beverages manufactured by Glorious, are approved safe by the Food and Drug Association (FDA) for pregnant women or people who have diabetes. Incidentally, all Glorious Blend beverages — from the 3in1 coffee, 4in1 Malunggay mix, 5in1 Brown Rice Coffee, 7-in-1 Mangosteen-Malunggay Coffee, 7in1Native Cacao Choco and Maxitrim with L-Carnitine, use Stevia which has no calories, no carbohydrates, and zero glycemic index. All of their instant drinks will keep you alert and energized throughout the day. For more information about Glorious products, log on to http://www.gidc.com.

Ladies, it’s time to #JoinTheBoobment and fight Breast Cancer

Join thousands of women in Avon’s Simultaneous Breast Self-Check on October 21

According to the Philippine Society of Medical Oncology, the Philippines has the highest number of Breast Cancer diagnoses among Asian countries, with 3 out of 100 Filipinos developing the disease before they reach the age of 75.

This becomes even more alarming in the current social climate as medical appointments become challenging due to quarantine restrictions.

Nevertheless, what most women might not be aware of is that they can perform a breast self-check right at the comfort of their homes, and that is a practice global beauty brand, Avon, has been advocating for almost 30 years, especially during Breast Cancer Awareness Month every October.

What most women may not know is that early detection of the symptoms is one of the best ways to prevent and treat breast cancer. In fact, survival rate increases to 90% if detected early. That is why this year, the brand is inviting women of all ages to again join THE BOOBMENT: Avon’s Simultaneous Breast Self-Check on October 21, 2021, happening at the Avon Philippines Facebook page at 6PM.The Boobment aims to encourage Filipinos to do regular checkups through a simple and fun routine that women can do every month.

“When you Join The Boobment, your support benefits all the other Filipinos who may or may not be aware of this indiscriminate disease,” shares Marion Limlengco, Avon Philippines’ Head of PR & Communications — “It is very important that we let everyone know that this disease can be addressed early, especially when you do self-checking right at home.”

Aside from this online activation, Avon is also partnering with KonsultaMD. The 24/7 subscription-based telehealth service virtually connects users to a doctor on call who can accommodate medical inquiries immediately. This partnership provides an alternative avenue of consultation for those who might detect symptoms of Breast Cancer.

Through The Boobment, Avon seeks to raise funds in behalf of the Philippine Cancer Society and Breast Cancer patients. The public may either donate via GCash QR code or through the purchase of limited-edition fundraising items at the Avon Shop. The items include the Self-Check Watch, which features a mechanism that will remind you when you should do your monthly breast self-check; the Breast Cancer Promise Manual Foldable Umbrella; and the Avon Empower Non-wire Mastectomy Bra, the first-ever post-mastectomy bra, a non-wired nylon micro-fiber lace bra equipped with soft lining with pockets for prosthesis and cushioned straps for comfort and support—specially designed with breast cancer survivors in mind

“Breast Cancer is not something we should take lightly, but it’s also not something we should be afraid of. But all of us need to be aware of the risks, the signs, and the actions to take should you encounter it,” concludes Limlengco. “That’s what the Avon Breast Cancer Promise has always been about, and that is what we’ve been always been advocating for.”

Help fight Breast Cancer by making sure you’re doing monthly breast self-checks (Tip: Schedule it 3-5 days after your period), and ask your loved ones to do the same. But if you want to take it further and pay it forward, you can also help others by donating or availing the Avon’s fund raising products.

Celebrating its 135th birthday this year, Avon has been supporting breast cancer awareness for nearly 30 years (since 1992), and in that time has raised $939m for breast cancer causes and funded 16.4m breast cancer screenings globally. QURE is here: A teleconsultation and wellness website made by Filipinos for Filipinos

A teleconsult website that promises to make medical consultations easy and convenient for many Filipinos was finally launched today, October 20.

QURE.ph, an all-Filipino-made website, provides a platform for online video consultations, connects doctors and patients for easy scheduling of appointments, and makes available a directory of pharmacies and other health and wellness providers.

QURE.ph offers a free platform for doctors who want to expand their services via teleconsult amid increasing demand for virtual consultation.

“We created this platform with the Filipino patient in mind. It’s a simple website and it does not complicate the teleconsultation process. Even those not comfortable with technology will find these consultations easy to do. This is our new normal and QURE is here to help you navigate the future of healthcare,” said Gary Libby, QURE Chief Technology Officer.

A trip to the hospital may also be burdensome these days, as the COVID pandemic persists. QURE will help Filipinos find their way through this public health crisis while keeping their health in check.

“This will definitely benefit doctors and patients. No more overbooking for doctors, and no more long lines for patients waiting for their turn at clinics. Whether via teleconsult or face-to-face check-ups, the scheduling system of QURE helps both patients and doctors,” Libby added.

Andrea Trinidad, Chief Executive Officer of QURE, said the idea of the teleconsult platform started last year when the lockdowns extended and it became difficult for patients to see their doctors.

Trinidad, who has a life-long disorder called hemophilia and is the president Hemophilia Advocates-Philippines, said the pandemic really affected patients.

“When I was approached by my friends last year and they shared with me their idea of a telemedicine platform, I told them it was brilliant.  We envision QURE to be an e-mall of health services where you can book consults, buy medicines, book laboratory appointments and even book a consult with the veterinarian for your fur babies,” she added.

More to know about QURE:

  1. The platform is data-safe, both for patients and doctors. Registering is FREE for patients and doctors. Consultation fees range from P500 to P1,500, depending on doctor’s specialization. But for its introductory price, QURE is offering a 50 percent discount for consultations

PETA’S UNDER MY SKIN ONLINE OPENS NEW DOORS

The Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) is bringing back Rody Vera’s provocative, relevant, and heart-wrenching anthology drama on HIV, Under My Skin, directed by Melvin Lee! Although the play’s run was cut abruptly because of the COVID-19 lockdown in March 2020, PETA revamps the play from stage to video, in partnership with esteemed HIV advocacy organizations LoveYourself PH and The Red Whistle, and UNILAB, Inc., PETA’s major co-presenter.

Under My Skin is inspired by real people and events, and it accurately depicts the realities, triumphs, and struggles of people living with HIV, while navigating an important conversation about acceptance and tolerance. The show introduces us to a number of characters – Jonathan, Greg, Syd, and Mario whose relationships are tested when Jonathan gets infected; Dino, an HIV-positive teen whose status is discovered through a contraction of tuberculosis; Mary Rose, a mother who unknowingly passed down the virus to her son after getting it from her husband; a gay beauty parlor employee experiencing work-related discrimination, and more. Their stories of love, pain, and acceptance are revealed through Dr. Gemma Almonte, who is studying the spread of the devastating virus.

Two weeks before the closing of Under My Skin at the PETA Theater Center in March 2020, PETA and other theater groups were forced to stop their shows because of the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Director Melvin Lee recalls how the lockdown was a blow for this play, especially since Under My Skin had been experiencing a steady rise of good traction.

In Gawad Buhay! Awards for 2020, Under My Skin earned a hefty number of citations such as Outstanding Script, Outstanding Stage Direction for a Play, Outstanding (Original) Play, Outstanding Female Lead, Featured Performances for Male and Female, and more.

“Nakakapanghinayang. In fact, I was in denial that the pandemic was happening. There were many good reviews and feedback, and people were talking about it,” Melvin Lee says.

Despite this, PETA remained hopeful that Under My Skin would soon have the chance to pick up where it left off. By January 2021, this hope came to fruition, as PETA was able to gather the cast and staff of the play for a closed-door filming, although there were difficulties due to the limitations caused by the pandemic. “We didn’t have the luxury to shoot as much as we wanted. There was a curfew then, and we had to do a lot of pre-production work to prepare for the shoot and follow health protocols,” shares Lee. “Actors are more concerned with the new medium, but in terms of the intention and the style, I tried to capture how it was originally on stage, with all the limitations we’ve had.”

Even though many people are missing live performances, Under My Skin Online is proof that a new window opens when a door closes. “In live performances, you see the unfolding of a scene right in front of you, but you are coming from one position in the theater. Now that it is on video, you get closer to the scenes and actors because of all the types of shots,” says Melvin. Because of the technology and medium, audiences are given a different lens on the play. “Even if you are seated and watching from a gadget, the scenes seem to get closer to you.”

PETA looks forward to Under My Skin Online reaching a wider audience. The PETA Theater Center has a seating capacity of around 450 people per show, but bringing the play to video enables PETA to tap more audiences who may not have seen the show in its original run. “Based on the reception that we’ve had since the announcement of Under My Skin Online, there’s a good indication that it will be received well,” says Melvin.

The timeliness of Under My Skin Online hits two birds with one stone. Currently, the world is still struggling through the COVID-19 health crisis, but the numbers of HIV cases are also alarming because they have not ceased to increase. “In fact, the number jumped during the COVID-19 pandemic,” reveals Melvin, as he refers to how testing and treatment for HIV has become more difficult in the pandemic.

“It’s one issue that we might think is well-discussed. We may even think that people are already well-informed about it, but when you look at the numbers, it shows that we still have more to do to spread awareness and education.”

The HIV issue is another health crisis that people should be aware of, which is why PETA encourages audiences to watch the play on video. In a time when the arts push to thrive amidst all the restrictions of lockdown, PETA embraces the migration of performances from live to virtual. Although it may take some time before things return to normal and the curtains rise once again, PETA, along with its partners, strive to make a new kind of stage in this virtual era, where we will continue our advocacies and make meaningful theater.

PETA’S UNDER MY SKIN IS REBORN ONLINE

After a successful run of Rak of Aegis Online, the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) announces another streaming play to cap 2021. This time, PETA revamps Rody Vera’s provocative, relevant, and heart-wrenching anthology drama on HIV, Under My Skin, directed by Melvin Lee, from the stage to the screen, together with esteemed advocacy organizations The Red Whistle and LoveYourself, and UNILAB, Inc., PETA’s major co-presenter.

Under My Skin was PETA’s last live performance at the PETA Theater Center before the lockdown in 2020 happened – just two weeks shy of the show’s closing. The play is inspired by real people and events, and it accurately depicts the realities, triumphs, and struggles of people living with HIV, while navigating an important conversation about acceptance and tolerance. Almonte, who is studying the spread of the devastating virus.

Although Under My Skin and many other plays were forced to close on such short notice, PETA had always been hopeful that the curtains would rise again, and that Under My Skin would soon have the opportunity to pick up where it left off. In January 2021, this hope came to fruition, as PETA was able to gather the cast and staff of Under My Skin for a closed-door filming of the play.

PETA Executive Director Beng Santos-Cabangon says that Under My Skin hopes to continue what it has set out to achieve, providing a space where various HIV-advocacy groups can unite and strengthen their cause, with art and theater at the centerpiece. “We believe that Under My Skin Online can continue to serve as a platform for probing conversations and reflections as well as bringing attention to and engaging the public on the issue of HIV and AIDS. Converting the production into the film medium would allow for more people to see it – and bring to the spotlight the advocacy,” says Santos-Cabangon.

“Amidst the COVID- 19 pandemic, we should be relentless in our efforts to address the problem of access to HIV prevention, testing and treatment. It is our hope that this endeavor will contribute in generating greater public awareness and concern, building a caring community and somehow helping eradicate stigma and discrimination,” she adds.

Now is also the time to generate urgent conversations about HIV and AIDS – especially since there has been a “21% increase in new infection brought about by the decrease in HIV prevention coverage and increase in treatment gap,” according to the 2021 data of the Department of Health. LoveYourself founder and executive director Ronivin Pagtakhan says that as the pandemic continues to evolve, we continue to adapt in the name of the HIV advocacy. “LoveYourself has allocated resources to shift our services online including refill for treatment medicines with XPress, self-screening with SelfCare, and setting up regular appointments for health check up with Booking as we contribute to ensuring equitable access of HIV-related services for key populations in the country,” says Ronivin. “We are glad to partner once again with the wonderful people at PETA to make Under My Skin accessible online for greater awareness as this initiative amplifies our advocacy’s voice towards ending the HIV epidemic.”

The Red Whistle also continues to respond to the HIV epidemic by addressing the need for a change in mindset. “Theater has the ability to move people to understand the issue more. We need to shift perspectives around HIV-related stigma and change attitudes towards our sexual health,” says The Red Whistle Executive Director Benedict Bernabe.

“If we want to change people’s minds, we need to tug on their heartstrings first. This is why the arts is an important and necessary component—especially during this pandemic—not just for awareness and education, but also for behavior change in the HIV advocacy.”

Under My Skin is now reborn for a new platform. In a time when the arts push to thrive amidst all the restrictions of lockdown, PETA embraces the migration of performances from live to virtual. Although it may take some time before things return to normal and the curtains rise once again, PETA, along with its partners, strive to make a new kind of stage in this virtual era, where we will continue to make meaningful theater.

Finally an All Japanese Ref Van is introduced in the Philippines

Japanese auto and manufacturing leaders forge partnership to provide cold chain transport solution

With a projected 10% growth seen in the domestic cold chain industry, three Japanese auto and manufacturing leaders pooled their engineering expertise together to come up with the Hino 300 ref van. This is aimed at providing the transport solution from the first and up to the last mile delivery segments of the cold chain industry. On a Japanese Hino 300 series light truck will be mounted either a 10 or 11-footer Japanese Cooltech ref van body from Centro Nippon Fruehauf (CFCI). Cooling power will be provided by a Japanese Denso DS2 cooling system, whether the need is for a chilled or frozen cargo condition.

In a recent Cold Chain Logistics Workshop between the Philippines and Japan, Cold Chain Association of the Philippines President Anthony Dizon showed that the cold chain industry is projected to grow to 550,000 pallet positions this year. “And we see the need nationwide for ref vans to transport goods from the farm or piers, to the cold storage facilities, then to the processing plants, then back to the cold storage facilities for its last-mile delivery to the retail outlets”.

This makes Mr. Hiroki Senoo, Vice President for Business Planning Division of Hino Motors Philippines (HMP) excited about this latest product offering resulting from the partnership. “With its outstanding features, we expect the Hino 300 ref van to be a game changer in the cold chain industry. It will fill the need for a reliable ref van and its durability and uncompromising quality will be backed by Hino’s one-stop solution where servicing of the ref system and body can also be done at any Hino dealership nationwide. That will make after sales service very convenient”.

HMP Vice President for Sales Division Oliver dela Cruz adds that the Hino 300 ref van is expected to change the country’s trucking and logistics landscape. “With the tough and tested Hino 300 light truck as platform in combination with a Denso cooling unit and Cooltech ref van body, it is designed to take on the rough and challenging terrains in the countryside. Customers can thus look forward to what is probably the best in Japanese technology in a ref van”.

For its cooling power, Denso has its highly reliable DS2 ref system which Mr. Masahiko Tanaka, Unit Head of Denso’s Sales Unit says has been proven to perform efficiently at lower operating cost. “It can handle the cargoes at the temperature desired by the customer whether in chilled or frozen condition. On top of that, it is environmentally friendly based on the materials and refrigerant used. We have engineered it to work well with the Hino 300 light truck and the Cooltech ref van body and deliver outstanding performance expected of an all-Japan product”.

The Cooltech ref van body uses extruded polystyrene which is a less water-absorptive insulating material. CFCI Production Manager Edd Nieva explains that the production of the insulated sandwich panels and subsequent assembly of ref vans utilizes Japanese technology, process and stringent quality control standards. “The Cooltech ref van body is engineered to fuse perfectly well with the Japanese Hino 300 light truck and the Japanese Denso ref system to come up with a reliable all-Japan ref van. It is the perfect fusion among a tough, durable truck muscle, a cost- efficient cooling unit and a high-quality ref van body”.
